Introduction On this activity, the experimenter is trying to conduct a social experiment about Conformity based on Filipino Socio cultural Values through social networking site. Conformity is a major aspect of our everyday social world; without it, it would be difficult for people to know what to expect.

Conformity is a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behaviour in order to fit in with a group. Also, it is the act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to what individuals perceive is normal of their society or social group. This influence occurs in small groups and society as a whole, and may result from subtle unconscious influences, or direct and overt social pressure. (Jenness, 1932). The popularity of social networking sites in the Philippines can be traced in the Filipinos’ culture of “friends helping friends. For Filipinos, their friends and who they know can become more valuable than money, especially when what they need can be achieved through nepotism, favoritism, and friendship among others. (Liao, Jerry, 2008). One example of these social networking site is Facebook. In facebook, a user is being notified on the latest updates and status of each his/her network of friends. Also, a user can write a note or blog, and has the option whether to comment on or like a certain post. Filipino values, for the most part, centered at maintaining social harmony, motivated primarily by the desire to be accepted within a group.

The main sanction against diverging from these values are the concepts of “Hiya”, roughly translated as ‘a sense of shame’, and “Amor propio” or ‘self-esteem’. ( G. Bloom, 2006). Social approval, acceptance by a group, and belonging to a group are major concerns. Caring about what others will think, say or do, are strong influences on social behavior among Filipinos. METHODS Participants The participants for this conformity experiment will be randomly selected among those friends of the experimenter who has an account on the social networking site Facebook. Apparatus Personal computer or laptop with internet connection.

Procedure 1. For this experiment, the experimenter will be needing a facebook account and create a shout out/ blog/ status. 2. The experimenter will send to his/her network of friends to comment on or like on his blog. 3. 24 hours is the alloted time before the experimenters to tally all the “likes” and posted comments. 4. The experimenter, again will send message to those people who liked and ignored the blog and ask them why he/ she liked of ignored the said blog. 5. To avoid deception, the experimenters will tell to the respondents that the blog written is true and at the same time will be used for experimentation purposes. . The experimenter then will randomly select 30 respondents who liked the status and create a table to categorize them. 7. Finally, the experimenter will record and analyze the results. Results The foremost challenge in human existence is that a man cannot live alone. This truth confirms the claim of a number of social psychologists that a man is a social creature who is affected with other people’s comments and judgements. Conformity, which is the tendency to shift one’s opinions or actions to correspond with those of other people because of implicit or explicit social pressure, is the central theme of this experiment.

For these experiment, the experimenter used some factors to show how does people conform with this type of scenario. The factors used are identification, interest and peer pressure as filipino social values. Below is a tabular presentation of 30 out of 103 randomly selected respondents who liked the status/blog. A check was marked to the factor that shows how they conform with the blog. When we say socio cultural, we refer to a force within cultures and societies that affects the thoughts and feelings and behavior of an individual.

Pakikisama and  pakikikapwa tao is basically seen among the Filipinos while they are doing one of their favorite trade and past time. For example is sharing thoughts in social networking sites like facebook and had their friends like or comment on their blogs. The experimenters, subdivide Socio cultural values in three factors. First factor is Identification. According to Kelman, H. (1958), Identification is the  desire to be like the influencer. We adopt an opinion or a behavior because it puts us into a satisfying relationship with the influencer. The major component of this type of conformity is the attractiveness of the influencer.

Second factor is Interest. As stated in Collins English Dictionary (2009), Interest is something that concerns, involves, draws the attention of, or arouses the curiousity of a person. The last factor is Peer pressure. As cited by Allen, Porter, McFarland, Marsh, & McElhaney (2005), Peer pressure  refers to the influence exerted by a peer group in encouraging a person to change his or her attitudes, values, or behavior in order to conform to group norms. The social influence a peer group exerts on oits individual members, as each member attempts to conform to the expectations of the group.

To start things up, I create a blog on my facebook account. I make sure that the blog is likely to be true and has a sense. I send messages to my friends to “like” and comment on the post. An alloted time of 24 hours is waited to check if how many people would like and post their comments on our blog.

As a result, a total of 103 persons liked our post and 25 persons commented on it (see figure 1 for the 24 hours monitoring period). Again, we send message to those people (randomly selected) who liked my blog and ask them for reasons for liking it (see figure 2). I also asked those people (also, randomly selected) whom we send message to like my blog but ignored it (see figure 3). Just as it said in the procedures, to avoid deception, the respondents have been told that I were doing an experiment about conformity and I will use their response as my data.

Most of them does not agree to be participants, but some of them agreed to be a part of my experiment . also, some respondents agreed to be part of the experiment but wanted their identities to be anonymous. Because I wanted to relate compliance, interest, and peer pressure as filipino socio cultural values on conformity, I disregard the data of those who ignored the posted blog and give attention to the comments of those who liked i t. First, I randomly select 30 out of 100 persons using the fish bowl method who liked the blog and ask them why they liked it (see figure 2, those are the people who agreed to include their post on this paper).

Next, I categorized their answers if it is out of compliance, interest or out of peer pressure and create a table to see the numbers of each factors has ( see figure 4). As a result, 19 out of 30 persons conformed out of identification, 15 persons conformed out of interest and eight persons conformed out of peer pressure. On the other hand, some of the respondents’ answers fall on multiple factors. four respondents conformed out of identification and interest, two respondents conformed out of interest and peer pressure, one conformed out of identification and peer pressure and one respondent conformed out of all three factors.

As shown on the table above, we conclude that mostly of the person whom we asked to liked our post simply liked it because we just tell or asked them to like it. We also conclude that they liked the post because they know the person who asked them to do so. We can also say that, disregarding the fact that the respondents know the author of the blog, they liked it because they are really interested about the given information. In relation to filipino socio cultural values, we filipinos are known for our “pakikisama”. We complies with a request or wish from a friend just because of these “pakikisama”.

It is also observable that filipinos cannot easily say “no” to a request especially coming from a friend. (e. g pedro: paki-like naman ng post ko.. juan: sige, sabi mo eh. ) Agoncillo, Teodoro A. A total of 103 likes and 25 comments (comment from the experimenter is not considered. ) from different individuals.
