Has anyone ever found themselves having a hard time accessing buildings due to a physical handicap? A majority of Dickinson State University students, faculty, and staff members can say they have at least once in their time here. DSU offers very little additions to the college to make it easier for anyone with a setback to access with ease. As quoted in everything’s an argument, “Many students and faculty will become temporarily disabled from injury at some point during their time at the university” (Deshpande, Manasi 399).

To make the campus of DSU more handicap accessible the college administrators could do a number of renovations such as adding ramps, automatic doors, handicap bathrooms, and closer handicap parking at the college. By doing so people with setbacks can feel less discriminated against, won’t have to deal with unequal prospects to succeed, and can feel independent at this college. Administrators allowing workers to build cement ramps alongside the stairs leading to the entrances of buildings would increase the progress of students, faculty, and staff members by allowing them to get around more effortlessly.

By adding ramps people in wheelchairs will be able to get inside the buildings easier and safer. People with crutches or any other kind of impediment will also benefit because they won’t have to endure those lengthy steps to reach the entrances. Even without a setback it is a workout to walk up the stairs at the college. Some would disagree on taking extra action for disabled participants because they may feel like people with a handicap are getting special treatment which is not fair to other students and faculty.

Renovators hired to assist in the process of building onto the college should also consider installing automatic doors. Automatic doors would help limited mobility participants, but also everyday students and faculty with no restraint. Automatic doors would help clearly by allowing deterrent people to not worry about another person opening the door for them, but also for any student who may have a very large load of books on his/her back. This way he/she doesn’t strain his/her own back in order to get through a doorway. No matter who you are one cannot argue with the fact that automatic oors do help the community as a whole by making access easier going into buildings. In all reality most adjuncts used for disability prone people can also be used to help others without a disability. Likewise adding an extension of handicap bathrooms would benefit DSU and its applicants by enhancing the well-being of DSU students, staff, and faculty that could at any time contract an injury. In many public buildings in Dickinson there is at least one handicap accessible bathroom. The college should see that and take action by adding at least one in every building, and if possible, on every floor level.

People who come to tour DSU will see this determination, and they will be pleased that this college is taking action to promote the lives of those who cannot get around as easily as others. In correspondence with seeing manageability more parents will feel like their child has a good place to study to further his/her education. As a result when parents who are sending their kids to college feel pleased with the college, and the effort put into it they will recommend their child to go to that particular college over others therefore raising the number of applicants.

A few people may argue that there aren’t enough students enrolled at DSU having a disability so consequently it isn’t worth adding all of these perks just for a small percentage. More than likely the money to pay for handicap bathrooms would come out of the pockets of students through tuition which most students would not be happy with. Furthermore parking is a big issue at Dickinson State University. Most of the student body and faculty can relate to this in some way. Considering the growing rate of Dickinson more people are going to college here so it is becoming overcrowded.

One anonymous student wrote, “There is very little parking on campus and it is hard during times of inclement weather when you have to walk a long way in order to get to class” (Campus Discovery 1). With more people the parking status is getting worse especially for those who need to be closest to the doors because they cannot park close enough. By adding more parking there won’t be as much risk of someone hurting themselves in the process of getting where they need to be. Students and faculty that do not have a disability or set back will benefit as well.

Certain people may dislike the idea of adding parking for the college because it is needed elsewhere in Dickinson more. Solutions that others have come up with in other areas involve adding stair railings to all flights of steps. This would help by allowing someone to support their weight which would decrease the risk of falling. Having a support while walking up and down stairs also takes the tension off of the legs so those who aren’t handicap also benefit from it by not being as winded by the time they reach the end of the stairs which some still might be.

This would help, but people would still have difficulties getting up and down stairs. Another solution that a different college has come up with has to do with an online program built for a large amount of disabled students. It is an online course that specially enhances the entire work load to make it easier for disabled students to earn a degree (Capella University 1). Many students don’t have the opportunity to take online classes so it would not benefit the entire percentage of disabled people.

Also this program online is built more for those with vision problems or mental illnesses which are considered disabilities. It is a wonderful investment for some but DSU doesn’t have a problem with that as far as I am concerned. I am more focused on disabilities that include getting from one point to the other through walking, riding on a wheelchair, etc. Consequently with restructuring there is a money issue which is a big factor in everyday life for almost everyone. In order for DSU to afford any further action towards modification the college for the disabled they must get the money to provide for it.

Students already complain about costs of college so they aren’t going to want to spend more money here if they don’t have to. Dickinson is a very expensive place to live also which doesn’t make it any easier to afford. The dorms are cheaper, but they are overcrowded so people have to find other places to live off campus. Even the meal plan for a DSU student is overly expensive which probably costs more than room and board costs. What I am trying to get at is that many students don’t have the money to take care of themselves let alone pay for someone else’s needs.

Additionally time is also a problem when it comes to the proper time period to get things done the correct way. Many workers that do these kinds of alterations don’t have time to help DSU with the reforms unless they are willing to pay more than anyone else in the district, which again comes back to money issues. Dickinson is growing so much that most workers that construct buildings to fit necessary standards are too busy with all the other buildings going up at the time to even consider DSU.

Even if Dickinson State University wanted to get someone to take time on changing the building they would probably be put on a waiting list till next year or even later. DSU’s maintenance crew could probably do all the improvements for the college but they also struggle with time issues because there is a lot to do on campus that is a higher priority than building onto the building for easier access to the handicapped. Furthermore to reflect on money issues and time issues there is the problem of disrupting students, faculty, and staff while they are either in class or on the job.

With construction of a building there comes noisy tools used to install everything. Students, staff, and faculty would more than likely be able to hear all the commotion which would distract them from their homework or jobs. Distractions would lead to students not doing as well in classes in some cases, and could also potentially lead to staff and faculty not getting their work done as well. Construction workers would also struggle with modifications because they would have to be careful for students and staff/faculty members passing by or underneath where they may be working.

This would slow down the constructors and the students and faculty/staff which would not benefit DSU what so ever. To conclude my proposal on adding ramps, automatic doors, handicap bathrooms, and closer handicap parking to Dickinson State University would exceptionally benefit virtually everyone at this college. There are a few problems that DSU could face with money, time, and disturbances but DSU wants to succeed, and they will try anything to make it a better college overall.

It is amazing how just a few simple additions can make a huge difference in a person’s learning experience, and make them feel independent enough to exclaim, “I go to Dickinson State University, and you should too! ” In a roundabout way a majority of DSU participants could benefit from this proposition in many different ways. What one has to realize before they see the difference is just how hard a handicap is to deal with, and how many people actually have one, visible or not.
