plot summary on i am david

I am David- Anne Holm “I am David” is a book about a twelve year old boy who is living in the time of the II world war. He escapes from a Nazi concentration camp with the help of a prison guard. David has been in this camp for the majority of his life and finds adjusting to the world outside hard. The first couple of night of being on the run he keeps living in the fear of the Germans recapturing him. David makes it to Salonika with mild surprises such as finding out what beauty. David then travels further into Italy to a town. He is amazed how lively and beautiful everything is.

He likes how everyone is accommodating. The sad part of the story is that he realises that the people of the town are beginning to talk about him so he leaves. David continues to travel and he reaches another little town further in the Italian country side. He once again camps out in the country side and enjoys a few days admiring the beauty of it all. Then one day a boy of about the age of 14 comes up to David and starts calling him thief and begins to beat him up. The boy is puzzled as David does not hit back but just walks away. Little did David know that he was to meet him once more!

The next part of the book is my favourite as it shows David enjoying happiness, but it also the saddest for David. He realises his mistakes and learns how to repent for them. The main event in this part of the book is how David saves Maria from the fire and is invited into Maria’s home. This is where he meets the 14 year old boy, Carlo, again. David only interacts with Carlo is really necessary and doesn’t want to even be in the same area of him for more than he needs to be. Maria on the other hand loves to be around David and would always affectionately ask him questions.

David would answer this became a daily ritual and David had many happy days with the family. One day, late at night the parents of the children were taking together. David had been listening to this conversation as the main subject was HIM. The mother of the children was displeased with David as he was always excluding Carlo and he was deeply hurt because of that, David would tell Maria things about the war and of all things evil and the mother feared he was a bad influence on Maria and her 3 other brothers.

So it was planned that David would be kindly asked to leave the very next morning. Sadly after hearing this David no longer wished to stay with the children’s family and so he wrote a letter and left it on the table in his room, says goodbye to Maria’s and leaves under the cover of darkness. David travels for many days enjoying the country side and all things that were beautiful when he comes across a town. He enters the town to find happy people that are taking, laughing and smiling. David thinks “How lucky are they to not even be affected by the war. In this place David manages to make some money and buy some cheese and bread. On the newspaper that the bread is wrapped with he sees a letter from Maria’s parents asking him to come back and that they were really sorry. But David decided to keep proceeding on his journey. David leaves the happy town as people start asking questions of who he was and once again tramps across the country side. On his way he meets a painter who paints a picture of him. The painter asks David to join her for dinner and to stay a few nights with her and so he does.

David is complemented on his table setting skills and he enjoys her company as she is very intriguing to talk to. One day David is given a photo album to look at which belongs to the artist. He flicks through it and a woman’s picture fell out. She was very pretty and David asks his host who she was. His host tells him that is her friend who has such a sad life as her husband and son were taken away from her at a concentration camp. She was the only one to escape alive as the guard was deeply in love with her so he helped her escape.

The artist also tells him that her friend lives in Denmark. David then realises that the woman who had escaped from a concentration camp was his mother He now has a purpose to work towards and so he begins the long trek to Denmark. Along the way he is enslaved by a cruel farmer and treated very badly, but the good news is he befriends a dog that will later save his life. David and the dog continue on their journey and when they reach the final barrier between Germany and Denmark they realise that they are a few 100 miles away from a concentration camp.

The dog heroically saves him by jumping if font of him and saving him from getting hit by a bullet. This is when David realises that the dog had willingly died for him and he, David, had not forced it to sacrifice its life. David thanks the God of the Green pasture and the still waters and continues on his journey to find his mother. He has now entered Denmark and his only problem is getting out of the countryside and into the city. To solve this he gets a ride from a passer by.

This is when he realises that he doesn’t now which house his mother lives in. While pondering this thought he considers finding a place to sleep and so he walks a little way into the city and collapses on the doorstep. The door opens and a woman comes out. She sees him and says “You’re my son, my son David. ” The author ends the book when mother and son reunite. It has an abrupt ending as no epilogue is provided. There is nothing written about what any of the other characters in the book are doing after David and his mother reunite.
